How to Tap away Stress with this Ancient Acupressure Technique

How to Tap away Stress with this Ancient Acupressure Technique

Have you got an upcoming event marked in your calendar with a red circle of fear? Anxiety makes appearances in everybody’s lives at some point, but this feeling of worry or anxiety should subside once the event has passed. For some, this stress remains, or worse, manifests itself in other situations further down the line.

Anxiety, as you’re probably aware, is a stress response which involves a sense of fear or dread, coupled with apprehension. With this comes a heightened state of arousal, which prepares your body for a fight or flight response, necessary to keep you out of harm’s way.

It does this by triggering a flood of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol that help you respond in an emergency situation but aren’t so useful when you’re about to give a presentation.

Chronic Anxiety

When anxiety becomes chronic, which is unfortunately the case for an estimated 40 million Americans, it can increase your risk for a number of mental and physical health problems further down the line.

Being in an anxious state for prolonged periods of time could actually cause your brain to become wired for it, triggering anxiety in situations that make you feel even only slightly uncomfortable.

Not only is this draining on an emotional level, but as we know, these chemical imbalances have a physical manifestation, so you could be damaging your body if you leave chronic stress or anxiety untreated.

What is Tapping?

Tapping

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) otherwise known as ‘tapping’ is a form of acupressure based on the ancient art of acupuncture (no needles here, though- phew!)

It uses the same energy meridians that have been used in acupuncture for over 5000 years to stimulate energy flow from specific points, but ties everything back to an emotional core through voicing your concerns. This is the key to tapping, as it works on a physical plane (like acupuncture does), but also on an emotional one.

By outwardly vocalizing the things currently causing you stress while tapping on energy meridians, you begin to suppress a lot of anxiety surrounding certain issues. EFT is an energy psychology tool that essentially rewires the brain, reversing the effects of chronic anxiety and their associated problems. Think of it as a reprogramming tool for your brain’s circuitry.

What’s going on in the brain?

acupressure and tapping

Generally, we think of our memories as belonging to the past, but draw up a memory now, think of what you had for breakfast this morning for example, and you’ll see that to remember something, you have to re-experience it in the present moment.

Our subconscious understands memories as current events. This gives you access to them in the present moment, as well as the ability to alter your body’s response to them.

The National Institute of Mental Health explains how the brain creates anxiety: “The amygdala is an almond-shaped structure deep in the brain that is believed to be a communications hub between the parts of the brain that process incoming sensory signals and the parts that interpret these signals. It can alert the rest of the brain that a threat is present and trigger a fear or anxiety response.”

Through tapping and recalling stressors simultaneously, your brain receives both messages at once, and you are able to send a message to the amygdala and hippocampus that tells them to calm down.

Think of the brain as part of the body’s system of energy. These meridian points give you a very strong connection to it. Tapping on these points essentially smooths out energy disruptions and just as acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat physical manifestations of pain, these same energy points can be stimulated to calm emotional manifestations of stress.

What’s going on in the body?

Tapping has also been shown to lower levels of cortisol, one of the stress-causing chemicals we mentioned earlier. One study by a Harvard researcher found a drop in the levels of the stress hormone of an average of 24% in subjects treated with EFT when those treated with talk therapy (and the control group receiving nothing) showed no such reduction.

Recent research has also shown that tapping increases positive emotions such as hope and enjoyment while decreasing negative emotional states like anxiety.

How can you start tapping?

This technique is really easy to learn and to implement into your day-to-day life. It can be practiced anywhere and at any time as it requires no equipment or specific conditions to really work in, though you do need to vocalise about your anxieties, so finding a private space might be preferable.

How to Make Cannabis CBD Infused Oil

How to Make Cannabis CBD Infused Oil

Recreational marijuana became legal in the state of Oregon in 2015, and I fully supported this law. Cannabis is a plant that was created by nature, god, mother earth, or whatever your belief system may be. This past summer, we grew the four plants that we were legally allowed in containers in our backyard, next to our tomatoes and squash. We harvested it in the fall along with our other vegetable and herb crops. We grew varieties that are high in a compound called CBD, which stands for cannabidiol. CBD does not get you high like THC does (another main component of cannabis), and is highly medicinal and pain relieving. I decided to make some CBD infused oil for topical use using the Harlequin variety that we grew, which is extremely rich in CBD.

Disclaimer: I only endorse you making infused CBD oil at home if recreational or medical marijuana is legal in your state, and you have any required cards and/or licenses to do so!

If you are unsure what the marijuana laws are in your state, here is a handy guide from NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws).

Legality of CBD in the United States

There is a bit of controversy and misunderstandings surrounding the laws about CBD itself. There are many claims that pure CBD extract is legal in “all 50 states,” but that is actually not entirely true. The wonderful folks over at Project CBD (such a great resource!) have spelled this out in clear detail when I questioned them about it:

“In the United States, CBD is classified as a Schedule 1 Drug, whether derived from industrial hemp or cannabis. CBD is not yet legal federally and it’s not legal in all 50 states, as is often claimed. The FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary or health supplement. All cannabinoids, whether psychoactive or not, are scheduled. All researchers attempting to study it must get a license from the Federal Government in order to do research. If it was legal, then there wouldn’t be so much difficulty getting more studies conducted on this compound. Selling CBD products in non-medical states seems to be a grey area in the law, but FDA recently busted people selling CBD in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. It isn’t out of the question to have legal action brought towards those selling CBD if they aren’t in a state recognized cannabis law.”

They also have a great page titled Sourcing CBD: Marijuana, Industrial Hemp, & the Vagaries of Federal Law that is an excellent read for more information on this.

Cannabis CBD Infused Oil Recipe

Now that we got all the legal mumbo jumbo out of the way, let’s get to making this CBD infused oil! This recipe is intended for use as a topical pain relieving oil that can be used as is or turned into a salve. I will be making a salve from this oil, you can see my recipe for that here.

The first step once you have your dried buds from a high CBD strain is to decarboxylate them. This is actually an optional but recommended step, as it will make more of the CBD bioavailable to the body. Luckily, it’s an easy process as well. Simply spread your buds out in a single layer on a sheet pan and bake at 230°F for 40 minutes.

As you may have noticed, we did not trim all of the inner leaves off of these buds, because they were covered with crystals that we didn’t want to go to waste!

Then put your decarbed cannabis buds into a jar and completely cover them with the carrier oil of your choice. I used a blend of approximately 25% unrefined coconut oil, 25% sweet almond oil, and 50% extra virgin olive oil.

Cover the jar with a lid and let sit in a dark place for several weeks. You may want to gently heat your oil a few times while it’s infusing, especially if you did not decarb your buds first. I like to do this in my Excalibur dehydrator, as it has excellent temperature control. I don’t like to heat my oils at too high of a temperature in order to preserve the quality of the oil and to keep it from going rancid. This is not as much of an issue if you are making edibles rather than topicals, as they are generally consumed within a much shorter amount of time.

After a few weeks, strain the buds out of your oil. If you want to make a super strong CBD infused oil, place a second round of decarbed buds into the oil and repeat the process.

You will end up with a highly fragrant and beautiful CBD rich oil!

There are many amazing uses for this oil, but the most popular use is probably for its pain relieving properties. Here is a great list from Project CBD on all of the other wonderful uses for CBD and its products, such as this oil.

I decided to turn this oil into a topical healing cannabis CBD salve, check out my recipe!

Is medical or recreation cannabis legal in your state? If so, will you be growing it or using it in any way?

How to Lose Weight With Acupuncture

How to Lose Weight With Acupuncture

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), Americans spend over $40 billion dollars annually on dieting and diet-related products. These programs simply don't keep the pounds off, which is why 60 percent of Americans are overweight and are turning to medical acupuncture for weight loss help.

Acupuncture to Stop Overeating

Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles to insert into specific "energy pathways" in the human body. The needles prompt the body to release endorphins. These natural "feel good" hormones create a calming, relaxing effect that reduces the stress, frustration, or anxiety that causes people to overeat. With acupuncture, there's no need for drugs.

Lose More with Acupuncture

A number of studies, including one published in the International Journal of Obesity, reveal that when acupuncture is combined with traditional weight loss methods, patients lose more weight.* Typically, one or two acupuncture weight loss treatments are a safe and effective way of keeping off those excess pounds.

According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, excess body weight is primarily due to an imbalance in the body caused by a poorly functioning spleen and liver. Acupuncture seeks to restore the body's balance by focusing on areas that affect weight loss: the endocrine system and kidneys, which control water retention; and the spleen and thyroid gland, which rebalance sugar and hormones. In women, the adrenal and ovary glands are stimulated to counteract weight gains caused by menopause or PMS.

Auriculotherapy (Ear Stapling)

An equally effective weight loss technique known as auricular acupuncture, or ear stapling, also shows promise. Unlike traditional acupuncture, where needles are removed after a short time, small surgical staples are left in the ear for days or weeks. Administered by a qualified acupuncturist, ear stapling can reduce food cravings to help shed those unwanted pounds. One study revealed that "bilateral auricular acupuncture stimulation can help reduce body weight in both mildly obese patients and in healthy non-obese subjects."**

One final thought: acupuncture is not a weight loss panacea. It should be combined with a reduced calorie diet and some form of physical exercise—like brisk walks, dancing, aerobics, or swimming. Always seek the advice of your doctor before beginning any acupuncture treatments for weight loss.
